Global trading in herbal products estimated at N19. 9trn
NaijaAgroNet:
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Winifred Oyo-Ita, has said that trading in herbal products worldwide is estimated at $100 billion, about N19. 9 trillion, NaijaAgroNet reports.
She said herbal products have become a great source of job and wealth creation worldwide even as she urged African countries to exploit their natural resources.
“I understand that Nigeria, like most other African countries presently, is yet to play very significant roles in this business. With our vast bio-resources, biodiversity and investment opportunities coupled with our competitive national advantage in this area and activities such as this, we should rapidly start to reserve this trend.”
“Given the important contribution that trade makes to economic growth and poverty reduction, we must strive to sustain Africa’s bio-resources and biodiversity to exploit her abundant natural resources.”
Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita was speaking at the 2015 HERBFEST workshop with the theme “Food as medicine: utilisation and sustainable exploitation of African medicinal plants and natural products” which was jointly organised by the Bio-Resources Development and Conservation Programme (BDCP), Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) and Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA).
According to The Nation report, she recognized science and technology as a veritable tool to drive the economy towards growth and sustainable development, adding the ministry has the critical and strategic mandate to boost the sector.
“For the nation’s bio-business to thrive and be sustained, her medicinal, aromatic and pesticidal plants (MAPPs), animals/animal parts and other raw materials used for herbal medicine, species, cosmetics and other products development need to be properly identified, made readily available and backed with scientific evidence based information and technological infrastructure to enable their cultivation and conservation,” she advocated.

FAO injects N97,117m to fight pests, diseases in Botswana
The Food and Agricultural Organisation
(FAO) has said it has injected P281 000 million, about N97,117 million in a bio security joint project
with the Ministry of Agriculture to fight pests and diseases in Botswana.
NaijaAgroNet gathered that the
project which was officially launched at Ramokgwebana border post by the
assistant Minister of Agriculture, Fidelis Molao, is expected to clamp down on
the risks of unsafe and contaminated plants and foodstuffs from being brought
into Botswana, even though the awareness campaign which is targeted at
cross-border travelers is expected to educate the public on the importance of
bringing into the country plants and non plants which have been inspected and
pest free.
According
to THEVOICEBW, an FAO representative, David Tibe, said that bio security
is critical if Botswana is to maintain and upscale its food security: “Increased
travel is also creating more pathways to spread diseases, pests and other
hazards that are moving faster and further than ever before,” Tibe said.
Tibe added that the joint project
will help the ministry of agriculture and other stakeholders to improve their
capacities at all levels to provide public services to plant and animal health
as well as food safety, NaijaAgroNet
learnt.

Harmonise ‘e’ is meant to analyze food and nutrition security, NaijaAgroNet reports.
She said this recently at a week-long workshop in Monrovia, adding that the national workshop was intended to analyze food and nutrition security using the Cadre Harmonise ‘e’ as a regional tool even as Liberia has joined 14 other countries in the Sahel and West Africa to work towards the adoption of the tool to tackle food and nutrition insecurity.

‘We’ve done lots of work on women to know their duties’
NaijaAgroNet
Apostle Henry
Iwuchukwu, Founder/Caretaker,Ark of Jesus Covenant Church International
(aka Jesus is the Answer) has revealed that his church has transformed the
women in the ministry to be able to
carry out their duties at home as wives, NaijaAgroNet reports.
He made this known to NaijaAgroNe tduring the One Year
Anniversary cum Mothers’ day of Women of Ark of Jesus Covenant Church in Lagos,
stressing that it’s not just coming out to shine in public but also to know
their duties as women and also wives.
“Today they can testify to the goodness of God that the
virtuous woman as theme of the one year anniversary is most appropriate.,”
Iwuchukwu said, pointed out that every woman has a responsibility which must
start from the home, promising that in the next edition he will nominate a
woman among themselves to speak to them and not from outside as was witnessed
this year.
Pastor Mrs. Vivian Anyiam, the Women leader, had earlier
confided in NaijaAgroNet that she
has made sure that the women respect their husbands, take care of their
children and homes. She also stated that between January and middle of April
there has been fifteen naming ceremonies in the church, that the Lord is actually
using the man of God to do a lot of miracle in the church.
She also said they teach them humility, even as she is building a
standard in them, to take care of the less privilege, be obedient and humble
themselves before God.
Equally speaking with NaijaAgroNet,
the guest pastor, Pastor Mrs.Evangelist Favour Igbokwe outlined the
characteristics of a virtuous woman to include trustworthiness, positive
influence, being a planner, hardworking,
investing for the home, she helps her husband to become successful.
She stressed that a woman should not change overnight
because the husband has noting doing again. She also confided in NaijaAgroNet that one can become
rich while doing the work of God but must first of all have passion for the
kingdom. She said that in a sinful and immoral society, to become a virtuous
woman the church should regularly organize programmes such as witnessed today and
that men and women of God should dwell on the truth and not to be afraid that
raw truth would scare members away
Pastor Mrs. Iwuchukwu also spoke to NaijaAgroNet on how she has been of
help in assisting the husband to take adequate care of members. According to
her, she regularly calls them together for counselling.
Yet for another member, Mrs. Grace Michael, the Treasurer of
Ark of God Women, being itsthe day of mothers, they are working in one accord,
that is why everybody is in a beautiful andcolourful to the glory of God.
