A federation works best when component units join hands for common good”, the Governor told the minister.

“It is in that line that I am here today. The first reason is to brief you on what the Osun state government is doing on the issue of food security and ongoing economic challenges facing the nation.

“Mr President yesterday briefed the state governors on the state of the nation. He outlined several steps state governors should take to stem the crisis of food security and inflation.

“I am happy to report that the Osun government has been very proactive. First we are setting up a State Security Trust Fund to mobilise financing for security agencies. This is going to be private sector driven.

“Secondly, I have conveyed a food security meeting for Monday to brainstorm on how to further secure our farmlands. I will be meeting representatives of Hunters association and the Amotekun commanders alongside the civil defense and police services. The goal is to strengthen farm security.

“Our administration is also working on Small Farmers’ Equipment Lending service. This is to ease the access of small scale farmers to tractors and other needed machineries. We are meeting this week to finalise the plan ahead of the onset of the rainy planting season.

“To expand food production, we are also pushing to implement a City to Farm programme. This was designed to encourage young small scale farmers. This will expand production amd also engage our youth.

“This is alongside our plans for a regional farmers’ markets where offtakers can meet farmers for exchange and market relationship. We need your technical support to implement many of the listed areas.

“On a more general level, our administration recently unveiled a Cocoa Revival plan for the state. It involves several activities which focus on moving Osun from 3rd to 1st cocoa producer in Nigeria. We seek partnership with the federal Ministry of Agriculture on this.

“Our government is also interested in the livestock development programme. We have submitted our expression of interest. Kindly help to facilitate early approval.

“The state is also interested in the Agro-processing zones project being implemented under the African Development Bank. I hosted a delegation of the AFDB in Osun two weeks ago. Your ministry’s support on this is also solicited.

“Overall , I seek an MOU with the ministry to ensure standby collaboration with our government. I will be glad if we can have a small committee to ensure the making of the MOU”, Mr Governor told the Minister and top management of the federal ministry.

Responding , Senator Abubakar commended the multi-partisan approach of the Governor to state governance, pledging to work on all the areas touched by the Governor.

He restated the determination of President Bola Tinubu to address the national economic challenges, informing the delegation that the meeting with the Governor was part of a broad plan to ensure immediate resolution of the current dislocations within the economy.

While describing the state governments as key partners in national economic development, the minister expressed happiness on the proactive measures listed by the Governor and assured him of federal support and assistance.

NaijaAgroNethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04341616036598550143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780038273636957737.post-18884799651627655382024-02-20T01:45:00.001+01:002024-02-20T13:54:50.825+01:00Nigerian Akin-Olugbade, joins AFAP Board of Trustees - NaijaAgroNet... Another 60,000 is being enrolled for ATM cards.

“I have directed the Commissioner for Transport to ensure efficient working of the Imole De Bus Service. Before new buses arrive, we must make judicious use of the refurbished buses to ply key routes where the services are needed.

“I have instructed key commissioners to review their service delivery to respond to the current needs and challenges of the people. The people must be regularly consulted and carried along on policy decisions and implementation.

“Our administration is ramping up efforts to deepen the state economy. I have directed the Commissioner for Power to expedite action on the Osun State Electricity bill.

“On the digital economy, I have also instructed the Commissioner for Science and Technology to present an implementation plan for the state ICT Policy and the State Tech Innovation policy. The bill for the domestication of the Nigerian Startup Act will soon be sent to the state assembly.

“I have further directed the Commissioner for Agriculture to prepare a state plan and bill to ease access to farm equipment and inputs for farmers. Of course, the ministry is finalizing the implementation plan on the state Cocoa Revival agenda.

“Our government is pumping millions of naira into the grassroots through hundreds of community associations. The multi-billion naira infra plan is ongoing.

“We are paying inherited half salary and pension debt long before Mr President so directed. We are paying wage awards to public servants and pensioners. Osun, almost a civil service state, has a lot to gain from public workers’ welfare because the informal sector depends mostly on the public sector.

“We enrolled all pensioners in the state health insurance scheme. This new week we are launching free surgeries for pensioners statewide. Mohammed Audu, representing Lau Ardokola and Karim Constituency at the green chamber, encouraged his colleagues to rally support for the National Summit on Agriculture to enable Nigeria meet up its 10% requirement as contained in the Malabo Declaration.

Agriculture, he said, is not just about putting food on the tables but a way of livelihood.

There are factors affecting agriculture like climate change and security and that was I said the NSA must be involved.

So, we must have another opportunity to discuss these issues in detail with all stakeholders in line with our budgets to achieve the 10% expected of every country including Nigeria.

This, he said, will pave the way for more research and improvement in agriculture sector.

He equally revealed that in other to streamline budget implementation, the 10th session of the National Assembly have issued a letter to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to explain what they did with the previous budgets so as to enable them know the focus areas desirous of attention.

This letter, he said, became necessary because MDAs could not be coming to NAS to ask for more money without showing the performance and indexes of performance.

MDAs, he said, must prioritize their needs beyond servicing staff emoluments when the research institutes and colleges are there wasting away and unable to meet up their capacities let alone their mandates.

"If we can’t make agriculture a means of livelihood. His words "this is one of the policy trusts of my administration; to train people on how to convert waste to wealth. And in essence what you're seeing today is a form of empowerment to the youths."

Continuing, Ikpor said "we are inculcating a mind of creativity in them, for them to ask questions such as what can we do with the nylon bags, plastic water bottles and other domestic wastes littered all over of our neighborhood"

He further stated that youths should embrace a clean environment and have the creative mind on how to turn nothing into something even as he warned that the era of graduating from school and waiting for a white collar job was over.

Ikpor maintained that by starting early, youths can equally create job opportunities for others while making money.

On the government involvement in waste management, Ikpor, a Banking executive and Management consultant insisted that government has done a lot to protect the environment and manage waste disposal but according to him, such could not be left for government alone hence he said he was calling on other organizations, companies and agencies to partner with Rotary for a healthy and sustainable environment for all.

He promised that the awareness would be carried out throughout the LGAs in Rivers state, primarily and secondary schools including market places among others.

Contributing, the Rotary president Port Harcourt Airfield, Rtn, Kelechi Ekezie was of the view that there was so much money in the street but most Nigerians are not aware of it. She said, "there is money in the street to be picked but Nigerians are not aware of it." She insisted, "there is so much money" speaking further, Ekezie said "what we want to teach them is how to make money while keeping our environment clean"

On Rotary's decision to involve the youths, she averred that the essence is to catch them young as according to her, the youths are the ones looking for jobs.

She noted that even while waiting for a better opportunity, they should start collecting waste and make money from there even as she emphasized that such did not require any certificate and markets are readily available.

She advised that people should stop indiscriminate disposal of wastes as such affects the ecosystem and cause flooding even as she admonished that "if you know that what you're disposing is valuable, you keep it"

A resource person, from the Department of Geosciences, Rivers State University, Dr William Azuka Iyama said, the county is talking about population rise. According to him, population rise would definitely affect employment rate. He added there are so many job opportunities in waste management and youths should engage in that instead of engaging in social vices which according to him, is the new trend in the society.

Dr Iyama who is the current councilor (Chairman waste management society of Nigeria WAMASON), Rivers state council and also a chartered chemist and member Renewable and Alternative Energy Society of Nigeria (RAESON) scored the government low in their involvement in waste management.

Iyama, who scored the government 10 % in waste management, said what the government is interested in is the removal of wastes from households without thinking of the level of employment it can generate. He reiterated that if the government should develop a typical Engineering Landfield in Port Harcourt, it could employ about 2, 000 people and ensure that our ground water is safe.

He regretted that some bore pits have been turned into houses even as people construct houses on such lands that were originally dumpsites.

He advocated that some local chiefs should be given a certain percentage of authority in their areas to conduct a monthly environmental sanitation and make sure waste generated is disposed accordingly without blocking the gutters; hence according to him, most areas do not have proper drainage systems but gutters.

He maintained that "since most plastic wastes are non- biodegradable, but form obstacles to the free flow of water, they should be properly disposed"

In his goodwill message, the Director, Institute of Geosciences and Environmental Management, Prof Akuro Gobo alluded to the Biblical scripture where God created man and gave him the power to conquer the earth and make it better.

“Unfortunately in our attempt to conquer one, we end up creating other challenges" Gobo said.

Commenting further, he said "Today consider the environment we are in as regards our conquering the earth, are we making the environment better?"

He regretted that our poor sanitary efforts have created unimaginable changes even as he noted that "we build, we dispose refuse indiscriminately and block our water ways."

"We dispose of our wastes indiscriminately into the drainages. Our drainages cannot discharge into nearby creeks and rivers. Areas not flooded before are now flooded as a result of our poor waste disposal practices," he lamented.

He therefore, recommends synergy among neighbours on sanitation, waste disposal and proper construction of drainages among others.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Governor Elect, Rotary District 9141, Rtn Chinedu Ikegwuani has commended the organizers of the programme.

He said the motivation and core mandate of Rotary club is to discover areas of need for the society and humanity in general and provide the needed support.

He maintained that Nigeria would remain underdeveloped until the culture of imbibing the habit of turning what was termed waste to waste.

His words, “Am very happy to be here today, waste is our major problem in Nigeria. We are losing a lot of money, until we turn what we regard as waste to profit, Nigeria will remain underdeveloped" Ikegwuani insisted.

He said what we refer to as waste is just a byproduct to others.

He advised the youths and those present to maximize the opportunity offered by Rotary club, Department of Geosciences, Rivers state university and Tilda Goes Green Foundation to better their lives and that of the environment.

Speaking to our correspondent, some of the participants at the event expressed satisfaction and vowed to put the knowledge acquired in practice even as they enjoined the government and other agencies and organizations to partner with Rotary for the sustainability of what they termed laudable initiative.

High point of the programme was the practical demonstration of how to convert some of the wastes to wealth.

Bon Peters/Editor in Port Harcourt, Rivers State

NaijaAgroNethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04341616036598550143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780038273636957737.post-63761404366318944032023-10-09T22:28:00.008+01:002023-10-09T22:28:58.201+01:00YEAP dangles N500m for agro-youth empowerment - NaijaAgroNet... External shocks, resource nationalism, export restrictions, mineral cartels, instability, and market manipulation could therefore increase the risks of supply shortages.

The report also highlights the opportunity to rewrite the script for extractive commodities and build the momentum for more inclusive, ethical, and sustainable value chains. Geographically widespread material reserves open opportunities to diversify the mining and processing to notably developing countries. Supporting policies will allow developing countries realise new business opportunities and could improve resilience while keeping the global decarbonisation agenda on course.

“The energy transition will become a main driver of demand for critical minerals,” IRENA’s Director-General Francesco La Camera said. “The risk of supply chain disruptions is less about energy security and more about the potential slowdown of the transition, which must be avoided. On the road to COP28, my message is to urgently strengthen collaboration on critical materials to minimise the geopolitical risks of concentrated supply chains and accelerate the deployment of renewables to limit rising temperatures to 1.5°C.”

He added: “The significant increase in critical materials gives the international community an opportunity to diversify supply chains and make them more sustainable. No single country can alone fulfil its demand for materials, so collaborative strategies that benefit all involved need to be developed and implemented. Particularly mineral-rich developing countries gain if they can capture a greater share of the critical material value chain. By redefining the narrative of extraction, we can promote a more responsible approach to the benefit of people and communities in pursuit of inclusive and resilient economies.”

Today, the mining of critical materials is highly concentrated in specific geographical locations. Australia (lithium), China (graphite, rare earths), Chile (copper and lithium), the Democratic Republic of Congo (cobalt), Indonesia (nickel) and South Africa (platinum, iridium) are the dominant players. Processing is even more geographically concentrated, with China accounting for more than 50% of the world’s refined supply of (natural) graphite, dysprosium (a rare earth), cobalt, lithium, and manganese.

Furthermore, the mining industry is dominated by a few major companies, leading to frequently oligopolistic markets. As a result, the industry is highly concentrated, with few controlling a significant portion of global production and trade. The top five mining companies control 61% of lithium output and 56% of cobalt output.

By contrast, critical material reserves are widely distributed. Developing countries currently account for most of the global production needed for energy transitions, but their share in reserves is even greater. For example, Bolivia has 21 million tons of lithium reserves, but produced less than 1% of the world’s supply. An estimated 54% of minerals are located on or near indigenous peoples’ land, underscoring the need for community engagement.

A renewables-based energy transition, if well-planned and executed, can rewrite the legacy of extractive industries, the report concludes. As has been the case with extractive industries for centuries, activities and processes carry risks for local communities such as labour and other human rights abuses, land degradation, water resource depletion and contamination, and air pollution. Stronger international cooperation to raise and enforce standards and longer-term corporate views are essential for sustainable development and social license.

NaijaAgroNethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04341616036598550143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780038273636957737.post-40491810462987873032023-07-05T01:49:00.001+01:002023-07-05T01:49:00.136+01:00Echoes from 2023 GEF council - NaijaAgroNet...
