Nigeria’s commitment to providing clean and sustainable energy solutions for both itself and the African continent has been bolstered by the commissioning of a new 40,000 cubic meters (CBM) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, the MT Iyaloja (Lagos), reports NaijaAgroNet.

This state-of-the-art, dual-fuel carrier was launched in Ulsan, South Korea, marking a significant step in the nation's energy transition.

The vessel is a joint venture between NNPC Ltd. and Sahara Group, under their partnership, WAGL Energy Limited. Its addition brings WAGL's total LPG vessel capacity to an impressive 162,000 CBM. The new carrier joins a growing fleet that includes MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT BaruMK, and MT Sapet.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, commended the partners for their "strategic foresight" and "unwavering dedication to expanding Africa’s role in the global clean energy value-chain."

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, reinforced this sentiment, stating that the vessel will be "crucial in realising the impact of gas in Nigeria’s economic development." He emphasized that NNPC Ltd. is committed to ensuring LPG affordability, availability, and access nationwide.

Mr. Temitope Shonubi, Chairman of WAGL and Executive Director at Sahara Group, noted that the fleet expansion is a testament to the company's vision of "responsibly driving efforts aimed at bridging the continent's critical energy infrastructure gap."
The MT Iyaloja (Lagos) was named in honor of the late mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, MFR. The symbolic ribbon cutting was performed by her granddaughter, Alhaja Folasade Mujidat Tinubu-Ojo. WAGL’s Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed Sani Bello, also announced plans to further expand the fleet with additional vessels within the next two years.
