NaijaAgroNet:

Lack of any aspect of the micronutrition deficiencies have a price both on the people and nation’s economy, reports NaijaAgroNet.

Speaking at a one-day media roundtable on micronutrition deficiency control (MNDC) in Lagos State, the deputy director and head of the MicroNutrition Deficiency Unit (MNDU), Family Health Department, Federal Ministry of Health (FmoH), Mr. John Uruakpa noting there are two kinds of nutrition and dietary requirements for man, namely macronutrients and micronutrients.
“Macronutritions include cabohydrates, lipids, proteins, amino acids and micronutrients comprises minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals," Uruakpa said.

Micronutrients, he said, required in small amount for proper growth and developmetn, insisting that their deficiency in the body comes with great consequence, stressing that micronutrients of public health importance in Nigeria are vitamin A, Zinc, Iron, Folic accid, Iodine, etc.”

According to him, quoting the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are some 400 million people suffering various deficiencies globally.

Also, he said that some 100m young children suffer from Vitamin A deficiency, whereas 3m children die because of vitamin A deficiency, just as 500,000 children reportedly go blind every year.

These, he said, are basically due to lack of Vitamin A, stressing that there are consequences of micronutrient include higher mobility, higher mortality in children, lower cognitive ability, lower work productivity, impaired reproduction and growth.

Nigeria, Uruakpa said, is suffering from burden of micronutrient deficiency which has been largely described as severe.

He said at the roundtable organised by the Civil Society-Scaling Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), pointed out that some 40.8 per cent, aged between 6-59 months received Vitamin A.

The National Nutrition and Health Survey (NNHS) 2018, he said, indicated that only 40.4 per cent of children between 12-59 months were dewormed.
