University of Agric Awba-Ofemili: House of Reps hold public hearing - NaijaAgroNet

The Federal House of Representatives on Monday, April 11, 2022, held a public hearing on the proposed bill for an Act to establish the Federal University of Agriculture Awba-Ofemili in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The bill is being sponsored by Hon. Sam Chinedu Onwuaso, NaijaAgroNet, took another progressive turn as the House Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions held a public hearing for the proposed bill in line with the processes of legislation.

This is coming as the Awba-Ofemili delegates commended Rep. Onwuaso for sponsoring such a development driven bill.

In his remarks as the sponsor of the bill, Rep. Onwuaso described the agricultural sector as a very critical component of the Nigerian economy and thus, any investment and effort aimed at improving the agricultural sector should be encouraged.

He also appealed to the Members of the Committee, stakeholders, various interest groups and invited ministries/agencies to consider the Bill as the proposed location is an epicenter of agricultural activities and will offer Nigerians more opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in agricultural science cum technologies when established.

According to Onwuaso, this university has become pertinent considering the fact that over 80 per cent of Nigerians are today dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Supporting the bill, the traditional ruler of Awba-Ofemili community, His Royal Highness, Igwe Ezekwesili Maduagwuna and Chief Dr. Edmond Okafor (Ikemba-Awba Ofemili) who spoke respectively on behalf of the high powerful delegation of the people of Awba-Ofemili Community, lauded Rep. Onwuaso for sponsoring such a development-driven bill and assured the House of Representatives of their readiness to assist, support and ensure that the vision behind the bill if passed into law, is achieved.
