The rollout followed a comprehensive three-day Climate and Health Media Workshop held at The Zone, Gbagada Expressway, Lagos. The capacity-building workshop trained journalists, podcasters, and digital content creators on evidence-based, human-centered, and solutions-oriented reporting at the intersection of climate change and public health.
Funded by the global charity Wellcome Trust, the initiative brings together a powerful consortium of academic, governmental, and civic entities; Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI), Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development (CHSD), University of Lagos, UrbanBetter, Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) Epidemiology, University of Cambridge, Hotsteppers Initiative.
Speaking at the launch, the Communications Lead for the Hotsteppers Project, Abimbola Badejo, highlighted rising ambient temperatures as one of the most neglected yet devastating impacts of climate change in developing megacities.
"When people hear climate change, they immediately picture flooding or ocean surges. But extreme heat is a silent, invisible crisis that is taking an increasing toll on public health and daily livelihoods," Badejo stated. "People often dismiss severe weather with a simple 'it is hot today,' but extreme heat is a serious public health hazard."
Badejo explained that prolonged heat exposure causes severe heat stress, dehydration, cardiovascular complications, reduced physical activity, and sharp drops in economic productivity. The burden falls disproportionately on vulnerable urban populations, including outdoor traders, artisans, transport workers, and daily commuters who spend extended hours under harsh conditions.
Raising public awareness and collecting real-time environmental data are vital steps toward mobilizing policy action and attracting targeted green investments to build a cooler, more climate-resilient Lagos.
To bridge the gap between scientific research and public policy, the Hotsteppers Project will provide journalists with localized datasets, thermal mapping resources, research digests, and expert network access.
Furthermore, the project will host quarterly "Story Sprints," enabling reporters to conduct hands-on field investigations across 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Lagos State to document localized microclimates and community adaptation strategies.Reinforcing the scientific urgency, Associate Research Professor Barbara Rubiell from the University of Cambridge emphasized that extreme heat combined with high pollution levels creates compound environmental hazards.
"Heat affects how people live, work, and move through urban spaces. When extreme heat co-exists with heavy air pollution, the health risks multiply exponentially," Prof. Rubiell noted. "Approximately 13 million deaths worldwide each year are tied to preventable environmental factors, making climate change a massive threat multiplier."
Prof. Rubiell added that urban design and socioeconomic factors aggravate heat exposure. Densely populated informal settlements dominated by uninsulated zinc roofing transform homes into thermal ovens during peak afternoon hours. Concurrently, emissions from heavy vehicular traffic, diesel generators, and open waste burning intensify localized heat islands, severely impacting labor capacity and quality of life.The Hotsteppers Project aims to establish sustained public advocacy, urban cooling interventions, and policy dialogues that safeguard the health and economic vitality of Lagos residents.
