The Hand-in-Hand (HIH) Initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has taken a major step forward in advancing digital transformation for smarter and more resilient agrifood systems across the Pacific region, reports NaijaAgroNet.

From July 7 to 11, 2025, the FAO Pacific Subregional Office convened a regional geospatial training and capacity-building workshop in Fiji, bringing together representatives from Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

Poor diets, ill-equipped food systems growing threat to nutrition

The Asia-Pacific region, home to most of the world's undernourished people, needs urgent action to improve diets and reset its food systems which are critical to the delivery of healthy, nutritious foods, says the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), reports NaijaAgroNet.

According to the findings of FAO's 2017 Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition report, there is a pressing need to tackle malnutrition alongside further promotion of the consumption of healthier foods while curbing the growth in consumption of unhealthy foods. 

In addition to further investment in agriculture, the report also underlines an urgent need to step up investment in other areas to tackle malnutrition, such as improvements to sanitation, access to safe drinking water, improving diets during the first 1,000 days of life and policies and promotions to increase consumption of diverse nutrient-rich foods.

While food security has improved for millions of people in the Asia-Pacific region, hunger and malnutrition appear to be on the rise in some areas, the report warns. The latest figures indicate roughly half-a-billion people are undernourished in Asia and the Pacific.

The situation is particularly dire for children below the age of five. Overall, one-in-four suffers from stunting.  However, the report also finds that, during the last 15 years, obesity is on the rise, with "significant increases" in the prevalence of overweight children, particularly in South Asia, that is from three per cent to seven per cent and Oceania, from five per cent to nearly 10 per cent.

Symposium on sustainable food systems, improved nutrition coming

A high-level meeting to examine concrete actions in the United Nations (UN) nutrition decade has been advanced to hold in Rome, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The symposium, NaijaAgroNet gathered is scheduled for December 1 and 2 at the Headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome.

NaijaAgroNet also gathered that some of the topics lined up for discussion include "How can we shape food systems so that they deliver foods for a healthy and nutritious diet? How do we ensure poor communities have access to markets that sell nutritious foods at affordable prices? What information should be included on food labels to promote healthier diets?"

These are among the pressing questions for discussion at the upcoming International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition.

The meeting which is jointly-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), NaijaAgroNet reports is expected to build on the successful Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) held in November 2014.

The symposium, NaijaAgroNet further report will be webcast live, will bring together policymakers and parliamentarians, international experts and scientists, chefs and young innovators, to examine concrete ways to change food systems so that they respond to current and future nutrition challenges, including climate change, population growth and economic inequalities.
