Today, September 22 is autumnal Equinox day, reports NaijaAgroNet.

According experts, on Equinox day, the sun sets exactly on the West today after rising exactly from the East, meaning that there is approximately equal day and night respectively today. 

They posited there is also vernal or spring equinox which occurs on March 21 with same description; based on the time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth and occurring about March 21 - vernal equinox, or spring equinox, whilst on September 22 is autumnal equinox.

The sun will now "cross over" and set progressively towards the SouthWest everyday, making the day shorter and the night longer, until its maximum southwest position on the December 2020 Solstice, when it reverses course again after the longest night and shortest day.

NaijaAgroNet gathered that simply put, around Equinox, there is equal day and night, while around Solstice, there is shortest day or night, depending on whether you are in the Southern or Northern part of the word (hemisphere).

In addition, NaijaAgroNet gathered, there are two Equinoxes and two Solstices annually.

Noteworthy is that often the sun rises from the East and sets on the West, thus a simplistic way of explaining the phenomenon.

In reality, NaijaAgroNet reports that the sun either rises from the North-East or South-East and only rises exactly on the East on Equinox and vice versa.
