The chairman of the ECOWAS-Non-State Actors (ECONSA), Mr. Henry Roberts of Liberia, has called for recognition and full support by the members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reports NaijaAgroNet.

He also urged them to live-up to the Malabo Declaration of committing 10 per cent of annual budget through the African Union (AU) in 2014 under the auspices of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) commitment, which is Africa's policy framework for agricultural transformation, wealth creation, food security and nutrition, economic growth and prosperity for all.
Speaking at the 2021 ECOWAS Agriculture Budget Summit in Abuja, on the theme, “The State of Public Financing for Agriculture in ECOWAS Member States” Mr. Roberts said this is achievable through their respective budgetary allocations and more support to ECONSA.
The governments, across the subregion, he also recommended should support the organization which is a national coalition with fiscal and moral support.
”That as we move more towards trade in the implementation of CAADP we fully implement the following but not limited to “Regional Trade Policies like the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCTA), implementation of Responsible Agricultural Investment (RAI) principles among others.
ECONSA equally called for critical look at the women and youth land tenure issues, just as the insecurity occasioned by farmers and herders clashes cannot be over-emphasised, whilst ensuring that climate resilence becomes a major agenda.
The 10 per cent budgetary commitment, he said, is a recommitment made by African leaders under the Malabo Declaration.
Mr. Roberts maintained that recent studies indicated that those countries that have made good or significant move to this commitment have shown significant increase in agriculture gross domestic growth.
