Experts have said that climate change among other dangers, are capable of increasing threats of malaria in the Central African regions, reports NaijaAgroNet.
According to a new report issued at an RBM Partnership to End Malaria conference in Abuja Tuesday, participating experts hanged their position on the recent survey, saying “surveillance and programme delivery need to improve to drive progress.”
Unlike countries previously surveyed in West, East and Southern Africa in early 2018, Central African respondents saw climate change as more of a threat. One respondent in Rwanda worried that malaria was creeping up into highland regions which had previously been free of the disease, and others discussed how changing rainfall patterns could have an impact on mosquito breeding seasons.
More domestic and international funding was also cited as critical, with respondents from Cameroon, DRC, and Republic of Congo saying more support is needed. Earlier this month, at the recent Replenishment conference for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, world leaders increased funding for programmes addressing these diseases with pledges totaling $14 billion for the period 2020-2023, meeting the Global Fund’s funding target. Rwanda pledged $2.5 million, DRC, Congo and Cameroon also made domestic resource pledges of $6 million, $5.5 million and $5 million, respectively.
Dr Richard Nchabi Kamwi, Ambassador for the Elimination 8 countries and a co-chair of the study, said: “Maintaining momentum against malaria requires strong political leadership, resilient health systems and securing additional resources. The pledges made at the recent Global Fund replenishment are heartening signs that critical resources are forthcoming.” Dr Kamwi continued:
“It’s also important that Cameroon and DRC have been identified by the World Health Organization and RBM Partnership as “high burden to high impact” (HBHI) countries, ensuring these countries will benefit from increased attention and investment from the international community.” The other study co-chair is Professor Bob Snow, KEMRI-Wellcome-University of Oxford Collaborative Programme in Kenya.
HBHI is an initiative supported by the RBM Partnership to End Malaria and the World Health Organization to build international support and country-led responses to reignite the pace of progress in the global malaria fight. Respondents associated with malaria control programmes in the two HBHI countries in the study were aware of the strategy and believed that with sufficient resources it would be highly beneficial.

Central African countries optimistic about halving malaria deaths - NaijaAgroNet
The Central African countries are optimistic about halving malaria deaths in the region by 2030, rather than elimination, reports NaijaAgroNet.
Latest surveyed showed that these countries believed halving malaria deaths is more achievable than elimination by 2030.
NaijaAgroNet gathered that Central Africa is fighting to maintain momentum in its battle with malaria in the face of other health challenges, climate change and other threats, according to a new report issued at an RBM Partnership to End Malaria conference in Abuja Tuesday.
The report was the latest extension of the Malaria Futures for Africa (MalaFA) study, commissioned by Novartis, which has already conducted similar research across 15 countries, including Nigeria, to survey African malaria stakeholders on progress and challenges towards global malaria targets. The new report involved interviews with 23 politicians, senior civil servants, malaria programme directors, researchers and NGOs in Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. All four are countries that have a significant malaria burden and differing policies in place to fight the disease.
In Rwanda, respondents were mainly positive about the country’s fight against the disease, citing high levels of political support and funding. In Cameroon, DRC and the Republic of the Congo respondents shared the view that halving deaths by 2030 was more achievable than elimination.
Respondents in Cameroon, DRC and the Republic of the Congo were concerned about access to health services, inadequately trained personnel, substandard or falsified antimalarials and self-treatment without diagnosis – which could potentially accelerate development of resistance to treatment. These concerns are shared in many other countries previously surveyed.

African leaders unite against malaria, launch ‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me’ - NaijaAgroNet
African leaders have launched the Zero MalariaStarts with Me, a continent-wide campaign co-led by the African Union
Commission and the Roll-Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership to End Malaria, to see
more people involved in the fight against the disease that kills over 400,000
Africans every year, reports NaijaAgroNet.
Following reports that malaria cases have increased for the
first time in more than a decade, Zero Malaria Starts with Me seeks to reignite
a society-wide movement to get back on track efforts that contributed to a 60% decline
in cases and saved an estimated 7 million lives since 2000, and to help meet
the goal of eliminating malaria across Africa by 2030.
The campaign, unveiled Sunday during the AIDS Watch Africa
Meeting at the 31st African Union Summit by President Macky Sall of
Senegal and King Mswati III of Eswatini and endorsed by 55 (TBC) African Heads
of State and Government today, empowers communities to take greater ownership
of malaria prevention and care, and to mobilise additional resources for the
effort.
President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Chair of the African
Union, says: “The African continent accounts for over 90% of the
global malaria burden. It is in this context that we have launched the “Zero
Malaria Starts with Me” campaign, a continent-wide public-facing campaign for a
malaria-free Africa. The campaign will reignite grassroot movements in which
individuals, families, communities, religious leaders, private sector,
political leaders, and other members of society pledge to take responsibility
in the fight against malaria.”
Inspired by Senegal’s nationwide campaign of the same name
launched in 2014, Zero Malaria Starts with Me is now being rolled out across
the African continent to encourage all citizens – political, business,
community and religious leaders, as well as individuals, families and
communities – to make a personal commitment to ending malaria for good.
To date, over 20 African nations have committed to join in
supporting the campaign, with presidents of Uganda, Zambia and Mozambique already
launching nationwide campaigns that include large-scale bed net distribution
drives to establishing high-level national End Malaria Councils and
parliamentary groups on malaria. Others, including the First Ladies of Ghana
and Niger, have pledged to do more to engage leaders and communities to fight
malaria in their countries.
President Macky Sall of Senegal comments: “In my
country, malaria has long been a major public health concern threatening the
socio-economic development and structural transformation trajectory that has
put our country on a firm path to sustainable development. It is through
national ownership, shared responsibility and global solidarity that we can
defeat malaria for good.”
HM King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Chair of
the African Leaders’ Malaria Alliance, says: “This campaign further
reinvigorates our commitment to eliminate malaria in Africa as we now call upon
all our people at all levels to work with us in ridding our continent of this
scourge. I urge all governments to invest more in fighting the disease, however
the success of this campaign will depend on partnerships and on collaboration
across sectors and amongst our population, for as government, we cannot win
this fight against malaria alone.”
The campaign offers simple tools to increase community
participation in malaria elimination efforts, keep pressure up on leaders to
stay committed to ending the disease, and forge new partnerships that can
contribute additional funding that will increase access to treatment, improve
diagnosis and prevention against the deadly disease. Campaign resources are

World Malaria Day 2018: AMMREN applauds African countries on free malaria by 2020
As part of the 2018 World Malaria Day, the African Media
and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), has applauded some five African
countries aiming to eliminate malaria by 2020, reports NaijaAgroNet.
AMMREN Executive Secretary, Dr. Charity Bika, applauded Egypt
and Morocco which have been malaria free since 2000 as well as Algeria, which
achieved this feat in 2016.
The network also acknowledged five African countries,
namely, Botswana, Cape Verde, Comoros, South Africa and Swaziland, which have
been identified as most likely to eliminate malaria by 2020.

to bring stakeholders together in the hope of winning.
Describing the fight against malaria as fight against one
of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases, Bika said that each year, 25th
April has been set aside as the World Malaria Day to highlight efforts to
control malaria and celebrate the gains that have been made.
Equally, she said, since 2000, the world has made historic
progress against malaria, saving millions of lives. However, half the world
still lives at risk from this preventable and treatable disease, which costs a
child’s life every two minutes.
As the world commemorates this year’s World Malaria Day,
the African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), made up of a group of
African journalists and scientists leading a malaria advocacy agenda, “it is
also gratifying that Algeria, Comoros, Madagascar, the Gambia, Senegal, and
Zimbabwe have also been honoured this year by the African Leaders Malaria
Alliance for leadership in scaling down malaria cases.”
As said by her, “we all look up to these shining examples
of countries that are making progress in the fight against malaria.”
AMMREN further urged countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and
Kenya to double the malaria control efforts to ensure they join or at least get
close to the ranks of countries at the elimination stages by 2020.

World Malaria Day 2018: Africa accounts for 90% of global malaria cases, deaths
Africa presently accounts for over 90 per cent of the global
malaria cases and deaths, according to the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership to
End Malaria, reports NaijaAgroNet.

that malaria costed Africa’s economy US$ 12 billion per year in direct losses,
and 1.3 per cent of lost annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.
As the world marks malaria day, today, April 25, 2018, NaijaAgroNet reports that globally
progress against malaria are being celebrated in order to encourage political,
scientific and personal commitments to end the disease for good.
The Roll Back Malaria partnership equally noted that 25th
April marks the tenth World Malaria Day and the culmination of a month of
worldwide action against the disease at a time when global malaria cases are on
the rise for the first time in a decade.
With the rallying call ‘Ready to Beat Malaria’, the RBM
Partnership to End Malaria, NaijaAgroNet
reports, is encouraging governments, health bodies, private sector companies
and the public to accelerate progress against malaria, making this World
Malaria Day even more vital.
“After a decade of success in pushing back malaria, it is on
the rise again and will come back with a vengeance if we do not act decisively
now,” warns Dr Kesete Admasu, CEO of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria.
“Half the world is still threatened by malaria, an entirely preventable,
treatable disease which takes a child’s life every two minutes. Worldwide
action is needed to meet the 2030 target of reducing malaria cases by at least
90 per cent. We are delighted that more countries than ever, forty-four, are reporting
less than 10,000 cases, however we must ensure we continue to press forward to
end malaria – not only in highburden nations but also those on track to
eliminate the disease. It is our global responsibility to consign malaria to
the history books,” Admasu said.
Dr Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho, RBM Partnership Board Chair
comments, “This month has seen world leaders come together to renew commitments
to step up funding and speed up innovations against the disease. It has been a

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World
Health Organization, says: “World Malaria Day reminds us of the challenges that
remain. The declining trend in malaria cases and deaths has stalled and vital
funding for malaria programmes has flat lined. If we continue along this path,
we will lose the gains for which we have fought so hard.
“We call on countries and the global health community to
close the critical gaps in the malaria response. Together we must ensure that
no one is left behind in accessing lifesaving services to prevent, diagnose and
treat malaria,” DG said.

Novartis enters 5-year partnership on malaria elimination, votes USD100m
A five-year commitment to the fight against malaria has been
entered by Novartis in conjunction with
the 7th Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Conference and the Malaria Summit of
the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, reports NaijaAgroNet.
Over the next five years, as part of its commitment, Novartis will invest more than USD 100 million to advance research and development of next-generation treatments to combat emerging resistance to artemisinin and other currently used antimalarials. The company will also implement an equitable pricing strategy to maximize patient access in malaria-endemic countries when these new treatments become available. In order to contribute to the WHO’s target of reducing malaria-related child mortality by at least 90% by 2030, Novartis will further help expand access to pediatric antimalarials and implement healthcare system strengthening programs in 4 sub-Saharan countries.
“Resistance to treatment presents the biggest threat to the incredible progress that has been made in the fight against malaria in the past 20 years. We cannot afford to wait; this is why we are committing to advance the research and development of next-generation treatments,” said Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis. “At the same time, we need to work to ensure that our innovation reaches those most in need, even those in the most remote locations.”
The R&D investment is meant to advance the Novartis malaria pipeline through 2023 and to complete a comprehensive global clinical trial program for our novel antimalarial drug candidates KAF156 and KAE609 (currently in Phase IIb and Phase IIa respectively [1]). Both are from new classes of medicines that were selected for their ability to treat malaria in different ways from current therapies. The investment also includes new uses of technology to identify areas where the malaria burden is greatest. This information could then be used to support capability- and capacity-building to establish future clinical trial sites, so the medicines can be evaluated in the populations where they are most needed.

GSK, MMV positive on single-dose tafenoquine reducing malaria risk
The GSK and Medicines for Malaria
Venture (MMV) has announced positive results from two phase III studies of
tafenoquine, an investigational 8-aminoquinoline, for the prevention of relapse
of Plasmodium vivax (P.vivax) malaria, reports NaijaAgroNet.
The headline results, presented
today at the International Conference on Plasmodium vivax Research
(ICPVR) in Manaus, Brazil, show that a single-dose of 300mg tafenoquine, when
given with a 3-day blood-stage chloroquine treatment, reduced the risk of
relapse in patients with P.vivax malaria significantly more than placebo
when given with chloroquine.
P. vivax is one of several species of Plasmodium parasite
known to cause malaria. After an infected mosquito bite, the parasite has the
ability to lie dormant in the liver and periodically reactivate causing
relapses of P. vivax malaria. These relapses can occur weeks or even
years after the initial infection. The disease is estimated to cause around 8.5
million clinical infections every year. Each of these infections keeps a child
or adult from school or work for at least 3 days.2 Studies have
shown that beyond lost time, malaria can also have adverse effects on cognitive
ability.
Since 2008, GSK and MMV have been
working together to develop single-dose tafenoquine as an alternative to the
existing standard of care, primaquine, which must be taken for 14 days for
patients with the relapsing form of malaria. The two phase III randomised,
double-blind studies, “DETECTIVE” and “GATHER”, were conducted in
malaria-endemic countries covering South America, Asia, and Africa.

Malaria vaccine trials: AMMREN commends WHO over 3 African countries selection
The African Media and
Malaria Research Network (AMMREN)
has commended the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the choice of three
African countries of Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, for the first malaria vaccine trials
beginning in 2018, reports NaijaAgroNet.
According to the WHO,
the injectable vaccine RTS,S was developed to protect young children from the
most deadly form of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and it will be
assessed in the pilot programme as a complementary malaria control tool that
could potentially be added to the core package of WHO-recommended measures for
malaria prevention.
Welcoming this
development, AMMREN Executive Secretary, Dr. Charity Binka told NaijaAgroNet
that they see the introduction of the vaccine in these countries as an
opportunity to step up advocacy directed to whipping up public support for the
malaria elimination agenda and specifically for the vaccine.
AMMREN, she said, also called
for the training and equipping of journalists to promote accurate and effective
dissemination of information on the vaccine and other tools to ensure that
media content on the vaccine is well packaged and disseminated in a timely and
accurate manner, nationally and globally.
In addition, she said building of the capacity of
scientists and researchers to communicate effectively with journalists from
data generated from malaria research, tools and the vaccine, cannot be
over-emphasised.
The network said that
by facilitating widespread
awareness of the RTS,S vaccine, particularly among families and community
members would foster accurate understanding of the potential risks
and benefits of the RTS,S malaria vaccine and need for continued use of other
malaria control measures.
NaijaAgroNet recalls
that AMMREN has over the years, laid a solid foundation for African journalists
to partner with scientists and stakeholders in the fight to kick out malaria
from the continent.
Thus, the skills of journalists
across Africa have also been sharpened to tell the malaria story as well as the
RTS,S malaria vaccine stories.
AMMREN further urged
all stakeholders to join forces to carry out a sustained media advocacy project
on the malaria elimination and to push for public acceptance of the RTS,S vaccine.

Clinical Trial: Sanaria’s PfSPZ-CVac vaccine achieves high-level protection against Malaria
A clinical trial has
seen Sanaria’s PfSPZ-CVac vaccine achieving a high level protection against
Malaria, reports NaijaAgroNet.
A report by the Nature described the achievement as a complete
protection after 10 weeks with three doses of PfSPZ-CVac, investigators from the University of Tübingen noted
that all nine subjects (100 per cent) immunized with three doses of Sanaria PfSPZ-CVac
malaria vaccine in a recently completed clinical trial were protected against Plasmodium
falciparum malaria.
This, NaijaAgroNet gathered was after they were exposed to the
disease 10 weeks after their last vaccine dose, according to the Director of
the Institute of Tropical Medicine at the University, led by Professor Peter
Kremsner.
He explained that PfSPZ-CVac
was administered to the nine subjects three times over eight weeks; the
research demonstrated the three doses were also safe and effective when
administered over just 10 days. Scientists at the Vaccine Research Center,
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), U.S. National
Institutes of Health (NIH) found that assays of the subjects’ cellular immunity
correlated with vaccine-induced protection. A team from Antigen Discovery Inc.
that studied the antibody responses of the nine protected individuals,
identified 22 malaria parasite proteins that could be the targets of protective
immune responses.
Sanaria founder and
CEO, Stephen L. Hoffman, MD said, “We are extremely encouraged by these
findings. Clinical trials of PfSPZ-CVac underway in Germany, the U.S., and
Equatorial Guinea, and soon to start in Mali, Ghana, the U.S., and Gabon will
lead to an optimized vaccination regimen that we expect to move rapidly into
phase 3 clinical trials and licensure. The ability to complete an immunization
regimen in 10 days will facilitate the use of PfSPZ-CVac in mass
vaccination programs to eliminate the malaria parasite and to prevent malaria
in travelers.”
PfSPZ-CVac is composed
of live, purified malaria parasites and the antimalarial drug chloroquine.
Volunteers in the clinical trial received three 0.5 mL injections of the
vaccine by rapid direct venous inoculation. Ten weeks after their last
immunization, all nine subjects who received the highest dose of malaria
parasites were protected against the injection of live malaria parasites.
The clinical trial
included 42 adult volunteers, 21-45 years old. Twenty-seven volunteers received
PfSPZ-CVac at varying doses to evaluate alternative dosage regimens. There was
no difference in adverse events between volunteers who received the vaccine and
those who received the saltwater placebo. They were enrolled, vaccinated and
assessed under the direction of Benjamin Mordmüller, MD at the Institute of
Tropical Medicine, University of Tübingen.
The German Center for
Infection Research funded the current trial with additional support from
Sanaria. Sanaria receives research support and funding from NIAID, which
supported vaccine manufacture for this trial, and multiple other institutions
in the United States, Europe, and Africa, most of which participate in the
International PfSPZ Consortium and will continue its fund-raising efforts to
expand its research and clinical programs.
According to the World
Health Organization, African children are hardest hit by malaria. The WHO
estimates that in 2015 malaria caused 214M clinical episodes and 438,000 deaths
worldwide; others have estimated
up to 730,500 malaria deaths in 2015. This enormous morbidity and mortality
occurs despite investment of billions of dollars in malaria control efforts. Malaria is also a concern for tourists,
diplomats, business travelers, aid workers, industrial workers, and military
personnel worldwide.
Professor Ogobara
Doumbo, Director of the Bamako Malaria Research Training Center at the
University of Bamako, Mali, said, “Those of us in countries where people’s
lives are devastated by malaria have been waiting for a highly effective
malaria vaccine for decades. We are excited about these new results with
PfSPZ-CVac in Germany, and are proud to be able to initiate the first field
trials of PfSPZ-based vaccines in Mali, West Africa in collaboration with our
colleagues from the Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology, NIAID,
NIH and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.”
Also commenting, Professor
of Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine, Dr. Martin Grobusch, who also is the Director
of the Center of Tropical Medicine at the University of Amsterdam’s Academic
Medical Center, a clinic that cares for more than 16,000 travelers annually,
said, “Travelers continue to be at high risk of acquiring malaria. A vaccine
like PfSPZ-CVac that provides complete protective immunity for 10 weeks and can
be administered in less than two weeks will be an ideal tool for the prevention
of malaria in the traveling population.”
