Senegal is on the front lines of the global climate challenge and will play a critical role in leading Africa’s response, Patrick Verkooijen – CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation said in closing remarks in Dakar, after meeting President Macky Sall on Friday.

Cutting climate finance risks stoking even bigger conflicts down the line. World Bank data indicates that internal climate migration could reach up to 1 million people in Senegal by 2050.

Senegal receives $50m to boost agro-nutrition

The West African country of Senegal, has received support worth $50 million, to boost government management of key sectors including agriculture and nutrition, reports NaijaAgroNet.

Disclosing this Tuesday, during her official visit to Senegal in West Africa, the Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Marie-Claude Bibeau, said the $50 million comes in as budgetary assistance to enable the Senegalese government to enhance its public financial management and governance.

She also said that empowering women would propel them to reply on their presence in all spheres of the society.

Bibeau, equally said, that women’s empowerment is crucial for development, particularly in Senegal, underscoring the fact that authorizing women would encourage them to reply on their presence in all spheres of the society.

“I am determined to ensuring that Canada’s international aid resources go first and foremost toward giving women the means to contribute fully to the development of their communities,” she said, adding that Canada would spend $112.6 million to fund four development projects and initiatives in Senegal.

Funding of $19.6 million over five years (2016 to 2021) will go to the International Development Research Centre to support the work being done by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, particularly in Senegal.

Obasanjo expresses fear over youths’ unemployment in Nigeria

The former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed fears that a time will come when Nigeria will witness a revolution if government fails to address youths’ unemployment and poverty.

Speaking recently at the West African regional conference on youth employment in Dakar, Senegal the former president said the growing rate of unemployment among youths is alarming that the effects can only be imagined.

He asserted that there is absence of serious, concrete, realistic, short and long term solution to youth unemployment. He revealed that the youth employment rate which was at 72 per cent in 1999 was reduced to 52 per cent in 2004 and as at 2011 was at 71 per cent again.

Incentives to be created by national leaders according to Obasanjo should include a special attention to agriculture business as against mere farming.

Obasanjo said there is need for easy access to land and micro credit, and the need to review the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) in order to accommodate issues around youth unemployment and job creation.

He also advocated the review of school curriculum to enable undergraduates spend additional one year to learn entrepreneurship.
