MVAC says N7.4b needed to avert hunger in Malawi

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) responsible for annual food security assessment has raised alarm that over 2 million Malawians are in critical hunger list saying that about N7.4billion as relief is required, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The investigation has it that over two million out of 16 million people (representing 17 per cent of the population) will not be able to meet their annual food requirement during the 2015/16 consumption period, requiring an estimated 124,000 metric tonnes of maize worth $37.2 million about N7.4 billion

The Secretary to the Treasury, Ronald Mangani said recently that there has been an increase of 116 per cent in the number of affected people during the period compared to over 1million during the 2014/15 period, NaijaAgroNet gathered.

“This increase has been as a result of weather-related hazards ranging from late onset of rains, floods and dry spells to early cessation of rains, all of which affected crop production during the 2014/15 agriculture season,” he stated.

According to him,  the government in collaboration with its development partners will be implementing response interventions to assist the affected populations.

This report, NaijaAgroNet learnt, was carried out by MVAC from June 8 to July 2, 2015 to assess food security situations in the country and determining the number of people who are likely to be food insecure.
