It begins innocently; a painless, movable nodule beneath the skin, a small plaque, or a localized swelling that is easily mistaken for a common insect bite, an ordinary boil, or a minor farm injury. Weeks later, without warning, it erupts into an open, necrotizing lesion with jagged, deeply undermined borders that aggressively eats through subcutaneous fat, deep tissue, and eventually, bone.

The Awba-Ofemili Development Union (ADU) Health Committee has urged greater vigilance against health-related misinformation, cautioning that myths and false beliefs surrounding diseases such as Buruli Ulcer (Elu-Ulee or Ulee-Okpa) pose a serious threat to community health development, reports NaijaAgroNet.

This call was made following the successful Awba-Ofemili Community Health Awareness Campaign 2025, themed “Buruli Ulcer (Elu-Ulee): Know the Signs, Stop the Spread,” held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Civic Centre, Awba-Ofemili.
