The President of the Republic of Kenya, Mr. William S. Ruto has visited the headquarters of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) in Rotterdam to participate in a Strategic Dialogue on the Africa Climate Action Summit.

The Africa Climate Action Summit is being co-hosted by the Government of Kenya and the African Union Commission on 4th to 6th September 2023, and is co-convened by the African Development Bank and GCA. The visit follows a meeting between Professor Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of GCA and President Ruto in Nairobi in February 2023 where they discussed driving the implementation and financing of climate adaptation through the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP).

Can you introduce yourself? Where are you from, where are you based now and what is your role with WFP?

I’m half Italian and half Swiss, but I grew up in Italy. Currently, I am based in the Regional Bureau in Nairobi, working as a Regional Environmental Officer. In my role, I help Country Offices reduce and manage the environmental footprint of their operations for a more sustainable tomorrow. I do this through applying our Environmental Management System, which helps us to systematically and consistently identify, monitor, manage, and reduce our environmental footprint.
Tell us about your professional journey. 

Why did you decide to pursue a career in sustainability?

My journey in sustainability started with my Bachelor’s thesis – a research on how different countries are progressively recognizing the right of access to clean water in their constitutions. I then did a Master’s degree in Sustainable Development in the Netherlands and Germany, where I studied the basics of environmental governance, environmental economics, and natural resources management. At that time, in 2013, sustainability was not yet a buzzword and my choice of studies was a bit of a gamble since there weren’t that many jobs in the sector.

Benchmark for world food commodity prices fall in March for the twelfth month in a row FAO Food Price Index declined 2.1 percent from February and 20.5 percent from a year earlier.

The benchmark index of international food commodity prices declined for the 12th consecutive month in March, driven by declines in world quotations for cereals and vegetable oils, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported.

The President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and H.E Paul Biya, President of the Republic of Cameroon have signed a bilateral treaty that would see the two West African countries cooperate on cross-border oil and gas development and monetization, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The agreement was signed during the heads of state summit of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) countries held in Cameroon last week and is set to bring with it new opportunities for oilfield development and regional energy security.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has crossed the 10 per cent primary series COVID-19 vaccine coverage milestone, a significant achievement in a populous country where coverage one year ago stood at below 1%, and where the health system is handling multiple priorities including Ebola, cholera and measles.

In January 2022, DRC was one of the 34 COVAX AMC-supported countries whose coverage stood below 10%. Today, with concerted support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF and WHO through the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership, only 6 countries remain below 10% - with Cameroon, Mali and Gabon amongst the latest to cross this milestone.

In its latest Cereal Supply and Demand Brief, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) informed that its preliminary forecast for world wheat production in 2023, predicting a global outturn of 784 million tonnes, which would be the second highest on record though down from the previous year.
