Liberia to analyze food, nutrition security using Cadre Harmonise ‘e’

The Executive Director, food security and nutrition unit, Ministry of Agriculture, Liberia, Deroe A. Weeks, said Cadre Harmonise ‘e’ is meant to analyze food and nutrition security, NaijaAgroNet reports.

She said this recently at a week-long workshop in Monrovia, adding that the national workshop was intended to analyze food and nutrition security using the Cadre Harmonise ‘e’ as a regional tool even as Liberia has joined 14 other countries in the Sahel and West Africa to work towards the adoption of the tool to tackle food and nutrition insecurity.

According to Weeks, the tool will help Liberia in terms of data collection and the documentation of the country's food and nutrition security and insecurity situations.
She explained that Liberia does not have hands-on data in terms of reporting food and nutrition insecurity and that the application of the regional tool will only enable the country be on track and collect data that will not be unique to other regional countries that are already using the Cadre Harmonise ‘e’ tool.

ALL AFRICA.COM reports that the Cadre Harmonise implementation process in the Sahel and West Africa has been fully underway and creates the country's ownership and occupies a strategic position among the various regional tools and will be used in the CILSS-ECOWAS-UEMOA region as a trigger tool of regional food reserve.

Dr. Charles McClain who represented the Agriculture Minister,  ITRealms gathered, thanked the participants and said as lead institution, the MoA is interested in getting more analytical data as the process moves on.

Sirleaf, Malac; Inaugurates Industrial Rice Processing Facility

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, will today officially inaugurate  Liberia’s first industrial rice processing and warehousing facility, Fabrar Liberia Inc., in Kakata, Margibi County, alongside U.S Ambassador to Liberia, Deborah Malac, NiajaAgroNet reports.

NaijaAgroNet gathered that with financial and technical support from the U.S. Government through the USAID Food and Enterprise Development (USAID FED) program and private equity financing from West Africa Venture Fund in 2014, Fabrar Liberia Inc. was able to procure an automated rice processing plant and expand its warehouse facilities.

The USAID FED Program, NaijaAgroNet learnt is implemented in six counties: Bong, Nimba, Lofa, Grand Bassa, Margibi and Montserrado and aims to reduce hunger and promote food security by increasing agricultural productivity and profitability of food crops (rice, cassava, vegetables, and goats), stimulating enterprise development and building agriculture workforce.

As against the previous supply of rice entirely by foreign imports due to a lack of domestic supply, NaijaAgroNet gathered that, the Liberia Government through the industrial rice processing and warehousing facility and Fabrar Liberia Inc. would market rice to local consumers in Monrovia and throughout the country.

Fabrar Liberia Inc. (Fabrar) was fully incorporated 2009, as Liberian owned and run agriculture holding firm to tackle food insecurity in Liberia by improving the livelihoods of farmers and providing them with increased access to domestic and international food markets

Mechanised farming solution to food insecurity says Ellen Sirleaf

Mechanised farming has been identified as the solution to food insecurity in Liberia, according to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, reports NaijaAgroNet.

In a nation-wide address recently in Liberia and monitored by NaijaAgroNet, President Sirleaf noted that it is only through large scale mechanized farming operations and agro- industrial operations which focuses on emerging small and medium size entities is the only way Liberia can attain food security.

She observed that Liberia as an agrarian nation must increasingly shift to agriculture to ensure that the nation moves away from the old system of enclave extractive industries.
“We must aim at a higher potential for import and export diversification through stimulation of production in a select few of our traditional tree crops such as rubber, oil palm and cocoa, she said.

NaijaAgroNet also learnt that she reminded Liberians that the private sector must become the driving force of the economy with Liberia’s entrepreneurs playing their rightful role, adding, that this can only be achieved with the support of citizens by promoting and buying products made in Liberia as well as through the payment of rightful taxes.

President Sirleaf then pledged her government’s commitment in doing its part in establishing a peaceful and easy business environment by reducing the bureaucratic hurdles and at the same time ensuring that tax regimes are fair and allow businesses to expand.
