UNICEF says Osun, Ebonyi top chart in Female Genital Mutilation, calls for actions
The United Nations
Children Fund (UNICEF) has listed two Nigerian states of Osun, and Ebonyi as
those topping chart in rates of Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C)
reports NaijaAgroNet.
Disclosing this in commemoration
of 2017 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on
Monday, February 6, the UNICEF
Representative in Nigeria Mohamed Fall said that there are some five states in Nigeria with over 60 per cent
FGM/C, with Osun and Ebonyi highest at 77 and 74 per cent respectively.
According
to the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey, UNICEF noted that the other
states are Ekiti, 72 per cent; Imo, 68 per cent; and Oyo, 66 per cent.
Hence, UNICEF called on governments at all levels, civil society
organisations, and traditional and religious leaders to join together and end
the scourge of Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting in Nigeria.
“Every study and every bit of evidence we have shows there is
absolutely no benefit to mutilate or to cut any girl or woman for non-medical
reasons. It is a practice that
can cause severe physical and psychological harm” Fall lamented.
UNICEF also explained that FGM/C
comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external
female genitalia, or other cutting of or injury to the female genital organs
for non-medical reasons. It is recognized internationally as a violation of the
human rights of girls and women.
NaijaAgroNet recalls
that in February last year, Wife of the President Mrs. Aisha Buhari launched a
national campaign to end FGM/C, calling on all parties to work together to halt
this harmful practice. Her call underlines the need for collective action at
every level.

World Bank, France boost agric sector with 37.4bn in Nigeria
The
World Bank Group and the French Development Agency have thrown their weight in
supporting the development of rural communities and modernization of
agriculture in Adamawa, Enugu, Osun and Niger states to the tune of US$230
million about N37.4 billion.
An
online statement sent by Bamidele Oladokun of the World
Bank Group and
sighted by NaijaAgroNet said the bank is contributing
$170 million while the French Development Agency is contributing $60 million
under the Second Rural Access and Mobility Project.
World
Bank Director in Nigeria, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly was quoted in the
statement as saying, “agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria’s rural
economy and growth in the non-oil sector which can be accelerated by improving
roads that are vital to increase agriculture productivity, access to health as
well as education for rural communities.”
It
also quoted Task Team Leader and World Bank Senior Infrastructure Economist,
Mohammed Dalil Essakali, as saying that “the sooner these rural communities are
provided with transport access under the project, the higher the chances that
they will see real improvement in their access to social services and to
opportunities to market their agriculture products, and hence increase their
income.”
The
release read: “Building on the experience from the First Rural Access and
Mobility Project (RAMP-1), that is rehabilitating more than 420 kilometers of
rural roads and 130 river crossings in Kaduna State, the Second Rural Access
and Mobility Project (RAMP-2) launched in Abuja will support rehabilitation,
upgrading and maintenance of about 1,450 kilometers of rural roads and building
65 river crossings.
The
statement added that innovative community-based road maintenance schemes will
involve local population in the design and operation of maintenance works, thus
creating employment opportunities for men and women living along the roads to
be rehabilitated.

OYES drafts 600 youths into agric programmes
The Osun state Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES)
has drafted over 600 of its members into the Osun Rural Enterprise and
Agricultural Programme (O-REAP) as disengagement programme for members of the
cadets.
Mr. Wale Adedoyin, the state Commissioner for
Agriculture and Food Security said the drafting of OYES cadets is in a bid to
boost government’s intervention in the agricultural sector.
NaijaAgroNet learnt
that Osun State government would provide soft loan as well as allocate land for
beneficiaries of O-REAP Youth Academy.
The commissioner also said that the fear by
members of the OYES cadets on the proposed disengagement programme led to the
land allocation and soft loans.
Adedoyin further revealed that a sum of
N476.35 million has been disbursed to 3,535 farmers under the Government
Guaranteed Agricultural Loan scheme, while N45,662,965.00 was disbursed as
O-REAP loan to 268 farm families across the state.
