Grow Africa Partnership secures $10bn to boost agriculture
NaijaAgroNET
Over 200 member companies have
committed $10-billion about N1.99 trillion in the Agricultural sector in 12
African countries aimed at boosting agriculture and employment on the continent.
This figure represents an
increase of about 40 per cent over 2013 commitment levels reports NaijaAgroNet.
Grow Africa released the figures at
the Grow Africa Investment Forum in Cape Town as the first stage of a joint
reporting process for Grow Africa and the New Alliance, on behalf of the
African Union.
According the information received
by NaijaAgroNet, “Investment
continues to increase: in 2013 and 2014, investments totalling $1.8 billion
about N358.2billion have led to the creation of 58 000 jobs, bringing
improvements in services and market opportunities to 8.6 million smallholder
farmers, who form the backbone of the sector’s production capacity.
Sarita Nayyar, Managing Director, World Economic Forum said, “We stand at a pivotal moment of opportunity to capitalize on an enormous body of collective learning to foster successful public-private cooperation. We must seize this opportunity to deliver on the promise of African agriculture to drive sustainable and inclusive economic growth for the continent.”
“Over half of the investment commitments come
from domestic agribusiness and service companies, which benefit from Grow
Africa’s focus on convening and facilitating multi-stakeholder partnerships to
strengthen inclusive agricultural value chains.”
NaijaAgroNet gathered that the Grow Africa Partnership was founded jointly in 2011 by the African Union (AU), The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the World Economic Forum to enable countries to realize the potential of the agriculture sector for economic growth and job creation, particularly among farmers, women and youth.
In 2014, about $300-million, about
N59.7 of staple and cash crops were sourced from smallholders as a result of
the investments.

Investment in ICT to boost healthcare markets in MEA
Investments
in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector are anticipated to
boost the four core healthcare markets of Middle East and Africa over five
years, reports NaijaAgroNet.
Latest
study made available to NaijaAgroNet
by International Data Corporation (IDC), spending on Information Technology (IT)
services and products among healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia, South Africa,
Turkey, and the United Arab Emirate (UAE) will grow by 70 per cent over the
next five years, expanding at 11.2 per cent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over
the five-year period from 2013 to 2018.
NaijaAgroNet also gathered that spending
priorities based on the study by IDC will be strongly driven by healthcare
policy mandates and efficiency improvement needs.
In
the context of a pronounced shortage of IT expertise among healthcare
organizations, NaijaAgroNet reports that IDC Health Insights expects the demand for IT services to
continue to rise in all four markets. In fact, IT services will be the fastest
growing segment of the healthcare providers' market, with particularly intense
growth projected in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Additional
highlights from the data showed that spending on mobile devices and networking
equipment will contribute significantly to overall hardware spending growth in
all four markets.
In
the software segment, NaijaAgroNet
reports that system infrastructure software still accounts for the largest
share of total external IT spending.
While
clinical information systems, NaijaAgroNet
gathered, makes up the smallest share but will post the fastest growth at 13.5
per cent annually.
Nino
Giguashvili, senior research analyst for IDC Health Insights, confided in NaijaAgroNet that all the four
markets are set to grow at an impressive rate, stressing "While these
markets present exceptional opportunities to healthcare IT suppliers across the
whole ecosystem, it is the right time to focus on mobile solutions to
healthcare providers' organizational needs, and MEA's healthcare challenges
overall."
The
study further gathered by NaijaAgroNet
indicates IDC's Middle East and Africa Healthcare Provider 2013 IT spending and
2014–2018 Forecast provides IT spending data and forecasts for 15 technologies
and five countries (Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey and the United Arab
Emirates).
Anulekha
Shetty of the Public Relations told NaijaAgroNet
that the study has been designed to help IT suppliers identify short and
long-term opportunities and for health providers to assess the state of the
market.

Agro stakeholders brainstorm on family farming in Africa
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector across the continent
are brainstorming on the family farmers ability to feed Africa and change the
face of the sector, reports NaijaAgroNet.
The Forum, NaijaAgroNet gathered is part of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture
Development Programme (CAADP) framework, coordinated by the five regional
farmers’ organisations namely the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF), ROPPA (Network of Farmers'
and Agricultural Producers' Organisations of West Africa (ROPPA), Southern
African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU), Regional
Platform of Central African Farmers Organization, (PROPAC), Union
Maghrébine et Nord Africaine des Agriculteurs (UMNAGRI) and their
continental platform Pan African Farmers’ Organisation (PAFO) together with the
NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency.
A press statement
made available to NaijaAgroNet
by the duo of Benito Eliasi from SACAU and NEPAD’s Mwanja Ng’anjo, stakeholders
in the agriculture sector are examining the much bigger role in creating
employment to increase disposable income levels and household food security on
the continent.
NaijaAgroNet
gathered that participants focus would be on the potential for sustainable
economic growth, family farming - Africa’s backbone in agriculture.
However in order for the women and men at the helm of
agriculture to reach their full potential, a coalition of partnerships was
required; to bring African agriculture to world class production levels, hence,
the partnership with several regional farmers group, between November 10 and
12, 2014 at the Garden Court within the axis of Tambo International Airport,
Johannesburg, South Africa.
NaijaAgroNet
further gathered that SACAU is a co-host of the forum that is connected to the United
Nations (UN) International Year of Family Farming and the AU Year of
Agriculture and Food Security.
NaijaAgroNet
recalls that this is a strong signal that the international community
recognizes the important contribution of family farmers to world food security.
Noting that in June, African heads of state committed themselves to use
agriculture growth to double food productivity, halve poverty and eliminate
child under nutrition by 2025 when they came up with the Malabo Declaration
following a meeting in Equatorial Guinea.
The role of family farmers on the continent, NaijaAgroNet learnt will be critical
in achieving these goals. While the forum would be attended by farmers and
representatives of their organisations, high-level government representatives,
private sector stakeholders and international role-players and is also open to
representatives who work in, with or for African agriculture.
