The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, through its Gender Unit in the Special Duties Department and the National Gender Steering Committee, has concluded plans to host a virtual consultative forum on Monday, September 30, 2025, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The session, scheduled to hold via Zoom, will review the National Gender Policy in Agriculture and its accompanying Strategic Plan of Action (2025–2030).

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) shall organize February 7, 2023 the validation meeting of its leading-edge study on the efficacy of community development agreements (CDAs) in mining host communities in Nigeria. This time with mining stakeholders in the southsouth/southwest geopolitical zones in Lagos, Nigeria.

The study conducted across six states in each geopolitical zone of the country in 2022, including Taraba (northeast), Kebbi (northwest), Kogi (North Central), Ekiti (Southwest), Edo (Southsouth), and Ebonyi (Southeast), is aimed at ascertaining the effectiveness of current CDAs regime as a tool for delivering social and economic benefits to mining host communities in the country. Penultimate week, the Northeast and Northwest regional validation was held in Kano.

Nigerian stakeholders have been urged to collaborate on early warning and response mechanisms, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (OSPRE), a center for the coordination of early warning and response mechanisms in Nigeria gave this charge at the end of a two-day inaugural summit and technical workshop in Abuja.

Reversing malnutrition rates: Stakeholders agree to draft voluntary guidelines - NaijaAgroNet

A multi-stakeholders concerned with reversing the growing trend of malnutrition under the aegis of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) wrapped up its 45th Session in Rome, with the task to formulate Voluntary Guidelines for Food Systems and Nutrition for approval in 2020, report NaijaAgroNet.

The guidelines are intended to be a reference document providing guidance to governments and other stakeholders on appropriate policies, investments and institutional arrangements needed to assure everyone has "available, affordable, acceptable and safe" diets in line with their beliefs and cultures.

CFS offers an inclusive platform that includes civil society and the private sector as well as governments an opportunity to voice views and develop policy recommendations and guidance on topics affecting food security and nutrition. Past outputs include landmark guidelines on land tenure and responsible investments in agriculture.

"Because of its inclusiveness, CFS is a powerful engine for combining political will and relevant knowledge towards zero hunger," said Mario Arvelo, CFS Chair and Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations' Rome-based food and agriculture agencies. "Building on the success of this session, we are all expected to renew our commitment as the range of participants expands to all potential partners, because eradicating hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030 can only be possible if everyone is on board."

Nutrition is a growing concern as the number of obese people in the world is rapidly catching up with the number of hungry. There are 672 million obese and 821 million hungry or malnourished people in the world, according to FAO's latest SOFI assessment.

Earlier this week, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva urged CFS to "step up" with strong guidance, emphasizing that "overweight and obesity must be a subject of public policies, not a private issue."

FAO tasks stakeholders to act on water scarcity

The Director-General of the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), José Graziano da Silva, has called for a better water management and improved access for small farmers, reports NaijaAgroNet.

He underscored the growing water scarcity, saying its now one of the leading challenges for sustainable development, and that challenge is poised to intensify as the world's population continues to swell and climate change intensifies.

Competition for water will intensify as humanity's numbers exceed 9 billion people around 2050 — already, millions of family farmers in developing countries suffer from lack of access to freshwater, while conflicts over water resources already surpass those tied to land disputes in some regions, he noted in remarks made at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (19-21 January) in Berlin.

Additionally, climate change is already altering hydrological regimes everywhere, Graziano da Silva said, citing estimates that around one billion people in dry regions may face increasing water scarcity in the near future. These are regions with a high concentration of extreme poverty and hunger.

Agriculture is both a major cause and casualty of water scarcity. Farming accounts for around 70 percent of fresh water withdrawals in the world today, and also contributes to water pollution due to pesticides and chemicals.

Non-Smoking in Public: Lagos hosts advocacy meeting for stakeholders

The Lagos State government and partners Tuesday hosted a one-day advocacy and sensitization campaign for stakeholders at a meeting in Ikeja-Lagos, reports NaijaAgroNet.

This, NaijaAgroNet also gathered was in compliance to the recently introduced non-smoking law in public places in the state.

Some of the speakers include Dr Yewande Adesina, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Public Health, Engr. Rasheed Shabi, General Manager/CEO, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and Mr Sola Dosunmu, Head, Regulatory Affairs, British American Tobacco (BAT), West Africa.

Nigeria poultry show exposes new techniques

Stakeholders in the poultry sector converged in Abeokuta, Ogun State for this year’s international Poultry Show to exhibit their product, services and imbibe new techniques into the global trends and practices.

 The National Chairman, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Dr Ayoola Oduntan informed NaijaAgroNet  that  the event serves as a business forum where participants learn new techniques, technology and recent advances in animal health and nutrition which will be beneficial to their farms.

 “Nigerian poultry farmers will use the numerous opportunities in this show to build networks and to key into the best global trends and practices that will redefine poultry farming in the country,” Oduntan said. 

Speaking on the occasion as the chairman, the former Minister for State Agriculture, Alhaji Adamu Waziri Maina, said that if the current campaign of “an egg a day” by the Poultry Association of Nigeria is achieved, 75 per cent consumption of poultry products will double in five years. 

A guest speaker, Mr Kola Masha, who spoke on the need to increase the consumption of poultry products, said the theme “Doubling Consumption of Locally Produced Poultry Products in Five Years” is apt as Nigeria is seriously lagging behind in terms of the consumption of poultry products. 

“The consumption of poultry products in Nigeria is only five per cent compared to South Africa’s 65 per cent and the Caribbean’s 85 per cent. Nigerians need to consume more poultry, which promotes the health of the nation,” Masha said.

CADP set to host Agric stakeholders forum

The Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) has perfected plans to host stakeholders in the Agricultural sector in an interactive forum in Lagos.

The state project coordinator, Kehinde Ogunyinka informed NaijaAgroNet that the forum is aimed at showcasing the results and impacts of CADP on small-medium commercial farmers in the State and to attract both local and foreign investors.

Ogunyinka listed some the projects by the Lagos State Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) to include 22.19 km rural roads in 10 locations, provision of transformers, extension lines and accessories and another 12.83 km rural roads that is ongoing in six other farming locations in Lagos State.

He said that CADP has supported 331 commodity interest groups engaged in poultry, rice and aquaculture value chains in the execution of their business plans to the tune of N657.487 million in Lagos State.

NaijaAgroNet gathered that the forum has been scheduled for Wednesday 18, September, 2013 at Johnson Agiri Complex in Oko Oba, Agege in Lagos.

Also, NaijaAgroNet gathered that the forum will attract  over one hundred and forty participants which will include small and medium scale rice, poultry and aquaculture farmers, processors, marketers, financial Institutions, community leaders and Non-governmental Organizations, state policy makers, representatives of the World Bank, members of the House Committee on Agriculture and the media.
