The Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) has supported the inauguration of the Local Government Committee on Food and Nutrition (LGCFN) in Orile-Agege Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State, report NaijaAgroNet.

CS-SUNN also said the inauguration of the Orile- Agege LGCFN was particularly apt as there was urgent need to increase efforts at tackling malnutrition at the grassroots in the state.

Ecobank supports WED 2018, says planting today'll protect tomorrow

In reaffirming commitment to help save the planet by supporting World Environment Day, the Ecobank has declared that planting today is all about protecting tomorrow, and urged supports for the World Environment Day, 2018, reports NaijaAgroNet.

According to bank, through this initiative, management and staff will plant trees across all 33 countries of its pan-African footprint. In addition, garden implements will be donated to local authorities to help nurture and grow planted seedlings.

Globally, it is estimated that between 3.5 billion and 7 billion trees are cut down every year. To counter this, Ecobank’s charitable tree planting initiative, ‘Planting today. Protecting tomorrow’, illustrates the bank’s firm belief that its long-term success is intertwined with the sustainable development of the economies, societies and environment in which it operates.

Ade Ayeyemi, Group CEO of Ecobank said: “Ecobank’s presence across 36 African countries gives us many advantages but it also imposes on us a huge corporate responsibility. It is absolutely right that we demonstrate our passion for preserving the environment for future generations through our actions as opposed to just mere words.”

Bibeau supports sexual reproductive health, rights

The Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Marie-Claude Bibeau, has announced funding of up to $20 million to organizations supporting sexual and reproductive health and rights, reports NaijaAgroNet.

The Minister revealed this while participating in the She Decides high-level international conference in Brussels, Belgium, saying that Canada’s investment will support five organizations that have a proven track record of delivering results in the area of the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls.

According to her, these organizations must provide critical sexual and reproductive health services and information that advances gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the developing world.

NaijaAgroNet also gathered that the funding is part of Canada’s comprehensive approach to closing existing gaps in reproductive rights and health care services for women.

Canada, NaijaAgroNet reports, remain committed to supporting access to the full range of sexual and reproductive health services and information.

This includes strengthening national health systems, investing in contraceptives, family planning and comprehensive sexuality education, supporting women’s right to choose safe and legal abortions, and access to post-abortion care.

 “Sexual and reproductive health and rights are human rights. All women have the right to choose whether and when they want to have children, and how many. The empowerment of women and girls everywhere in the world begins with their right to be in control of their bodies,” Bibeau said.

NaijaAgroNet recalls that an estimated about 225 million of the world’s women and girls have an unmet need for modern contraception.

Whereas, NaijaAgroNet reports that maternal mortality is unacceptably high with the global record showed that about 830 women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth every day. Just as every year, an estimated 22 million women and girls worldwide put their lives at risk by undergoing unsafe, clandestine abortions.

Canada responds to Hurricane Matthew, supports Haiti with N12.6bn

The Canadian government has drummed support for Haiti in response to the Hurricane Matthew to the tune of $54 million, about N12,628,569,600 billion, repots NaijaAgroNet

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, made this disclosure recently on her first official visit to Haiti, where she met with Canadian and international humanitarian partners working in the most affected areas and government officials in Port-au-Prince., saying the $54 million in funding is to support various humanitarian and development projects in Haiti.

This funding, she said, includes $2.65 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help meet the immediate needs of those affected by natural disasters and $1.4 million to support the ongoing election in Haiti and ensure citizens are able to participate at polling stations in affected areas, as well as a $50-million call for proposals to strengthen agriculture through long-term development projects.

NaijaAgroNet recalls that the damages caused by Hurricane Matthew severely affected Haiti’s local food resources, including fishing and agriculture. Canada has been one of the top donors in responding to the effects of the hurricane. Today’s additional humanitarian assistance funding will help provide emergency food assistance and respond to the agricultural needs of the most vulnerable.

These initiatives are part of Canada’s balanced response to Hurricane Matthew and long-term development needs which are in line with Canada’s long-standing engagement in Haiti.
