The Pan Yoruba self-determination coalition known as Apapo Oodua Koya (AOKOYA), has urged the South and Middle Belt State Governors to reject the agro-rangers which the Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed to deploy to states, reports NaijaAgroNet.

According to the group in a press statement available to NaijaAgroNet, 'This is RUGA in disguise. It is an attempt to give protection to violent pastorist Fulanis, who are bent on taking over Yoruba territories by force of arms."

Animal deaths worsen food crisis in Africa

The Animal Health Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Dr. Felix Njemi has said that the large number of animal deaths is worsening the food crisis in Africa, especially in countries south of the Sahara, NaijaAgroNet reports.

Njemi was among experts from across Africa who agreed that trans-border diseases kill between 10 and 20 per cent of the continent’s animals every year. The experts, who gathered in Cameroon recently to discuss the problem, suggested large vaccination and pest eradication programmes to stop the spread of the diseases.

He said, “The strategy is the large vaccination at the country level. Undertake surveillance to detect any case of the disease and strengthen collaboration between member nations and even between international institutions. Imagine somebody who has 10 animals and loses eight. The disease can have impact in food security.”

Many poor people in African countries, he said, depend on goats and sheep for their livelihoods, even as he said  FAO is urging farmers to be on guard against transboundary animal diseases warning that ticks, lice and other pests can spread quickly from one country to the next, NaijaAgroNet gathered.

According to information from, Voice of America (VOA), the Cameroon’s livestock minister, Dr. Taiga, he does not use a first name, on his part, said pests like nose bot flies and wool maggots are harming animals in some communities in his country.

He said that all animals in an area must be killed if one animal is affected because the diseases are contagious. They spread quickly from animal to animal. He said that is why the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health are working together to destroy the diseases. He says that when central African countries succeed in killing the pests, their human populations will enjoy better quality protein, NaijaAgroNet reports.

South-West youths set Power, agriculture as agenda for Buhari

The Youth Alliance Movement of Nigeria (YAMON) South –West zone, has called on the incoming administration led by General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) to give priority attention to provision of electricity and infrastructural development to boost economic prosperity of the country, NaijaAgroNet reports.

Comrade Akanni Michael, the national president of the group, outlined areas they hope could transform the country if well harnessed in a press briefing held at the weekend in Lagos. He said that the incoming administration must revamp the power and agricultural sectors as well as encourage industrialization.

In his words, NaijaAgroNet gathered,  “Generate, transmit and distribute from current 5,000 – 6,000 MW to, at least, 15,000 MW of electricity by 2020 and increasing to 50,000MW by 2025 with a view to achieving uninterrupted power supply by 2025 whilst simultaneously ensuring development of sustainable, renewable energy.”

“A cue could be taken from the Food Corporation of India, which has played a significant role in transforming the Indian food economy. It operates through a country- wide network of institutions and infrastructures at the zonal, regional and district level. Nigerians should consider only those leaders who pay special attention to the following aspects of agricultural development.”

“This can be achieved by application of modern and indigenous technologies; price assurance for farm produce; special incentives for private sector involvement; local government involvement; construction of feeder roads; development of crop sub-sector.

 He insists that “government will need to modernize the sector and change Nigeria from being a country of self‐subsistence farmers to that of a medium, commercial scale farming nation/producer,
