Some key actions needed for the African continent, and globally, to transform agrifood systems and deliver better nutrition, have been outlined by the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, reports NaijaAgronet.

Speaking at a high-level meeting of African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Mr. Dongyu explained that a series of key actions should be put in place to address Africa’s nutrition challenges.

A total of 281 million people living in Africa are undernourished, a joint study has revealed, reports NaijaAgroNet.

According to the latest joint report on the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, led by FAO, informed NaijaAgroNet that aside the undernourished 281m, nearly 60 million African children under 5 suffer from stunting and 14 million suffer from wasting.

The Forum is a platform for meaningful dialogue in which Indigenous Peoples’ representatives convey their concerns, requests and recommendations to improve the partnership with IFAD towards sustainable rural transformation. The outcome of the Forum will be presented by representatives of the Indigenous Peoples to the IFAD Governing Council, the following week.

The study conducted across six states in each geopolitical zone of the country in 2022, including Taraba (northeast), Kebbi (northwest), Kogi (North Central), Ekiti (Southwest), Edo (Southsouth), and Ebonyi (Southeast), is aimed at ascertaining the effectiveness of current CDAs regime as a tool for delivering social and economic benefits to mining host communities in the country. Nigeria is a study in contradiction. It has the largest proven gas reserve in Africa yet faces a significant challenge in providing access to gas for a majority of its citizens and businesses. On top of this, it occupies an unenviable position as one of the top seven gas-flaring countries in the world, according to the World Bank. The tale would be unbelievable if it was fiction.

Sadly, the reality is grim. Oil-producing companies burn off millions of cubic litres of natural gas during oil production. They use a fancy term, gas flaring, to describe it. It doesn't however take remove from the fact that the action, gas flaring, is a glaring waste of a wasting resource. It also impacts negatively on the environment, human health and the cost of gas. It needs to be stopped.
